OUR Juneteenth vs. The 4th of July!

Updated: Jul 18, 2021

Why should our Black community give more power to celebrating Juneteenth versus the 4th of July or better known as Independence Day? The importance of celebrating Juneteenth was OUR Freedom Day for Black people within the United States of America. Texas was the last state to acknowledge, adhere to, and recognize the law passed on January 1, 1863, more than two and half years earlier. OUR ancestors' enslavement by our white counterparts was a long, horrific, and detrimental period.

The Emancipation Proclamation passed by Abraham Lincoln, in addition to, our faith, allowed and provided hope and a future for the Black community. Juneteenth received recognition for combining the month of June with the 19th date. Therefore, giving Juneteenth significance, declaring our Freedom Day for the Black community. Our diligence to maintain and remain alive, our perseverance to keep praying and to keep fighting, WE triumphed, as a people and warrants the name Juneteenth!

The celebration of Independence Day, known as the 4th of July was adopted, acknowledged, and announced upon separation among colonies, formulating the United States of America, severing ties with Great Britain. A win for the United States of America. However, the important difference between OUR Juneteenth versus 4th of July?... Human life being set free from being disenfranchised and marginalized versus a country declaring independence! Our Black community certainly gained ground and has come a long way. However, WE, as a people, still have a long way to go.

The Juneteenth date commemorates our achievement. Juneteenth celebration, in all its glory, comprising not just Freedom Day for our Black community, but the opportunity to monetize black-owned businesses, promote and support black entrepreneurship while forging prosperity, making a difference within our Black community. Deterring other races from monetizing Juneteenth by selling our products or the like, is part of recycling, maintaining, and safekeeping our Black dollars within our Black community.
